THREE CLASSIC COOKERY BOOKS
FANTASTIC MAN 20 Mar 2010, 6:00 am CET
As Spring approaches with its bounty of produce, a beneficial pursuit would be to invest in some classic cookery books, written with knowledge and expertise rather than as a tie-in to any television programme. The first, the FOUR SEASONS COOKERY BOOK, has nothing to do with the New York restaurant of the same name, but was written in 1970 by Ms. MARGARET COSTA. Split into seasons, for Spring she offers cream of asparagus soup, mustard cod, green gooseberry and elderflower jam and a delicious rhubarb fool. Written more recently is THE BOOK OF JEWISH FOOD, which is a celebration of all things matzoh, bagel, gefiltefish, and lox. It was written by Ms. CLAUDIA RODEN in 1996, includes over 800 recipes, and supplements the cookery with memories and histories of a faith that is spread around the planet, a benevolent view separate from the more common tales of 20th century terror. Fans of desserts should note that it includes a recipe for macaroons. Meanwhile, EUROPEAN PEASANT COOKERY by Ms. ELISABETH LUARD was first published in 1980 and was the result of 20 years of research. From its pages can be cooked such simple treats as garlic scooping salad, stuffed aubergines with anchovies and ravioli with sausage stuffing.
school report comparisons
welcome to optimism 20 Mar 2010, 12:30 am CET
Every year Campaign magazine publishes their 'school report' issue, scoring UK agencies on their performance over the year. They always say something like, 'our scoring system is based on how an agency has performed against our expectations, not how it compares to its competitors. So if a great agency has a mediocre year, it will likely score lower than a previously duff agency that has a promising year'. This means that, of course, they always get calls from outraged CEOs saying, "God's balls, Jemima! How can you give Mediacorp six out of ten when my agency only got four, despite winning the prestigious Land of Fauxleather Furnitureworld account? I'm so gutted I may have to cancel our lunchiepoo at my club."
Despite what Campaign says, everyone looks at the scores as a competitive ranking. So, for ease of comparison, here's how the different agencies stack up. (Scores go from 2 (a year to forget) to 9 (outstanding).
How Campaign
scores agencies.
Work Club
- Most agencies think they had a good or excellent year in 2009, despite worst recession in living memory
- None is arrogant enough to score themselves 'outstanding' (9)- Agencies generally rate themselves higher than Campaign does

Channeling Hunter S. Thompson
A Continuous Lean. 19 Mar 2010, 5:48 pm CET
Keep Aspen weird, that has been my battle cry. Maybe it is the fact that I am missing out on that thing (that I love) that is happening in Austin this week. At any rate, I have spent the better part of a week out in Aspen, the fanciest corner of the Colorado Rockies. We did some skiing and we did some snowmobiling, and afterward we went to longtime Aspen resident Hunter S. Thompson’s old watering hole the Woody Creek Tavern for shots of Jameson and cans of Tecate. Nestled neatly alongside a ramshackle stretch of Aspen’s finest mobile homes, the Woody Creek Tavern is quite possibly America’s ultimate dive bar. The regulars each sport their own brand of crazy — upon entering the Woody Creek one particularly welcoming regular inquired as to what spaceship my friends and I had just come from. Spaceship Reality sir.
In the summer the locals ride their bikes over and enjoy al fresco beers and burgers (which I hear are fantastic) and then catch the bus back to town feeling no pain. While it was fun to see all of Aspen’s rich people and private jets, like Hunter, I felt most at home at the Woody Creek.

Nom de Guerre Classic Shirt
INVENTORY Updates 19 Mar 2010, 4:22 pm CET
Nom de Guerre has had a pretty interesting off-season with a lot of changes going on behind the scenes and re-arranging and organization all around. The samples that were shown last spring were pretty heavily criticized by the buyers I spoke to, yet the core of the collection and ideas I thought were quite strong. The New York brand have changed quite a few details and as the spring collection begins to deliver I am fairly impressed with a number of the pieces. The pattern and fabric of this ‘Classic Shirt‘ is really great looking. It feels light and fresh, just enough color to make it interesting, but still easy to wear.
